When you think of a perfect getaway, what comes to mind? For many, it’s the soothing sounds of nature, the refreshing embrace of cool water, and the joy of making memories with family and friends. At Luray RV Resort & Campground on the Shenandoah River, you can have all of this and more—without ever leaving the property! One of the most relaxing and unique experiences we offer is floating down the Shenandoah River, and we’re here to give you all the tips and tricks you need to make your float a breeze.
Experience the ultimate adventure as you float along the tranquil waters of the Shenandoah River, where the beauty of nature surrounds you, and the thrill of river tubing awaits! Soak in the stunning scenery and create unforgettable memories with friends and family as you enjoy a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
The moment you ease into your tube or kayak, you’ll feel the gentle push of the Shenandoah carrying you downstream. The pace is unhurried, encouraging you to sink into the moment and tune in to the sights and sounds around you. A float trip here is a feast for the senses: the steady flow of water beneath you, the warm sunshine on your face, the rustle of leaves in the breeze, and the calls of birds echoing through the valley.
As you drift along, you’ll observe many of the area’s natural highlights. Rocky outcroppings and sandy riverbanks emerge at intervals, ideal spots to pause for a quick swim or a snack break. You might catch a glimpse of turtles sunning themselves on logs or smallmouth bass darting beneath your tube. The river often widens, allowing you to soak in expansive views of the Blue Ridge and Massanutten Mountains that flank the valley, standing guard over this pristine waterway.
For those craving a touch more adventure, you’ll occasionally encounter gentle riffles. They’re not large enough to pose any serious risk, but they do add a refreshing burst of excitement. If you’re kayaking or canoeing, be prepared to navigate around small islands or choose the best channel. For tubers, the riffles can provide a fun, splashy ride—just remember to keep your rear end raised to avoid hitting rocks in shallow spots!
Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley is renowned for its biodiversity, and the river corridor is an excellent place to witness this up close. Great blue herons often patrol the shallows, keenly eyeing the water for fish. Kingfishers dart to and fro, their distinctive call echoing above the water. In the early mornings and late afternoons, white-tailed deer may wander down to the river’s edge to drink, regarding passing floaters with curious eyes. If you’re exceptionally lucky, you might catch sight of a bald eagle soaring high overhead, scanning for prey or simply enjoying the thermals that rise off the valley floor.
The scenic wonders extend well beyond the wildlife, however. In summer, you’ll pass riverbanks brimming with wildflowers such as black-eyed Susans, coneflowers, and cardinal flowers. Willow, sycamore, and river birch trees cast dappled shade across the banks, offering welcome respite on sunny days. As autumn approaches, these same trees burst into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and yellows. If you’re floating later in the season, the reflection of fall foliage on the river’s glassy surface is nothing short of mesmerizing—an Instagram-worthy moment that requires no filter.
While the Shenandoah River is known for its relatively calm waters, safety should always be a priority. Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD—even if you’re an experienced swimmer. The river’s depth can vary, and unexpected snags or changing currents can arise. If you’re floating with children or inexperienced paddlers, try to stay together and within clear sight of one another. Keep an eye on the weather forecast; thunderstorms can develop quickly, and being on open water during a storm is dangerous. If you spot ominous clouds, err on the side of caution and head for shore.
Be mindful of your physical well-being as well. Bring enough water to stay hydrated and take regular sips. If you’ll be out for more than a couple of hours, pack extra snacks or a light meal. Sunscreen is essential—apply and reapply throughout the day, even on overcast days when UV rays can still penetrate. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can shield you from both sun glare and heat exhaustion. Taking these simple precautions ensures you’ll have a safe, comfortable float.
After a leisurely float, you might crave a hot shower, a delicious meal, or a little more adventure on dry land. Fortunately, Luray RV Resort & Campground is situated near a wealth of local attractions. A short drive away, you’ll find the famous Luray Caverns, home to towering stalactites and stalagmites that have captivated visitors for generations. The on-site Car & Carriage Caravan Museum adds a historical twist to your caverns visit, showcasing an impressive array of vintage vehicles.
For nature lovers, Shenandoah National Park and its popular Skyline Drive are also within close reach. Here, you can embark on scenic hikes that offer panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. From the iconic Stony Man and Hawksbill trails to lesser-known footpaths winding through lush forests, there’s a hike for every skill level. The park’s diverse wildlife, which includes black bears, deer, and numerous bird species, further enriches the outdoor experience. Be sure to cap off your day with a breathtaking sunset from one of the many overlooks along Skyline Drive.
One of the true gifts of floating the Shenandoah River at Luray RV Resort & Campground is the way it encourages you to detach from daily stresses and reconnect with the rhythms of nature. Out on the water, the clamor of modern life fades into the background. You’re free to watch the sky change color, follow the drift of clouds, and appreciate the quiet grandeur of the Blue Ridge Mountains standing sentinel on the horizon.
By day’s end, the experiences you gather—laughing with friends as you navigate gentle riffles, spotting a heron gliding gracefully above the water, feeling the cool river current beneath you—leave an indelible mark. These aren’t just photos you’ll share on social media; they’re stories you’ll recount long after you’ve packed up your gear and headed home. Whether it’s your first time visiting Luray or your annual summer tradition, each float on the Shenandoah River has its own unique flavor. And that’s a big part of the draw: no two days on the river are exactly the same.
For a 30- to 45-minute tube ride, you don't even need to leave the resort! Within a short drive up river, many guests prefer to be dropped off at one of several public access points to experience a longer stretch of relaxation.
Luray RV Resort guests are invited to bring their own river tubes. For your convenience, tubes are also available for purchase in our camp store!
